National Service Scheme (NSS):

National Service Scheme (NSS), Dhenkanal Autonomous College, Utkal University, Odisha, works under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. ‘Not Me But You’ is the sole motto of NSS which stand as a motivating and encouraging aphorism to strengthen nation;s youth for nation building. NSS was founded in 24th September 1969 during Gandhiji's centennial year. It is a student social wing that aims to build students' personalities through community service so as to instill in them a sense of social responsibility to serve society without prejudice. NSS Dhenkanal Autonomous College takes pride in its dedicated volunteers who takes up various social services in the community to create a healthy and beautiful society. NSS tries to bridge the gap between grassroots needs and governmental efforts.

The broad objectives of NSS are to:

-> understand the community in which they work;
-> understand themselves in relation to their community;
-> identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
-> develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
-> utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
-> develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities;
-> gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
-> acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
-> develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
-> practice national integration and social harmony.

NSS Activities:
NSS through its various activities aims to provide a variety of learning experiences to inculcate a sense of participation, service, and achievement among the student volunteers. With this aim, NSS includes two kinds of activities: Regular Activities and Special Camping Programme.

Regular Activities:
Regular Activities may include adoption of a village/ slum, coordination with voluntary organizations, and campaigns on issues like environment, animal rights.

Special Camping Programme:
Special Camping Programme through extended stay offers unique opportunities to students for group living, leadership building, collective experience sharing and constant interaction with the community. Each student volunteer is expected to devote 120 hours in one academic year to be eligible for an NSS certificate.
